Job Description:

Description: The Manager, HIM Coding is responsible for the planning, implementation, optimization, and on-going performance of HIMS coding functions. This job shall work closely with the HIMS Director in setting direction for optimal use of staff and technology to enhance operational quality and efficiency.

Typical Duties:

  1. Assesses the activities of the coding staff to ensure staff is knowledgeable of ICD and CPT coding, coding guidelines including accurate code assignment, sequencing of diagnoses and procedures, MS-DRG assignment, APRDRG assignment and APC assignment.
  2. Develops, revises, and maintains all coding policies and procedures and ensures the information is distributed to and understood by coding staff.
  3. Coordinates quarterly external coding audits with contracted vendor and ensures that internal monitoring of coding quality is ongoing. Utilizes information obtained from these audits and monitoring to develop coding education programs.
  4. Monitors the unbilled report and coding edit work queues, makes staff assignments accordingly. Works with to resolve issues that cannot be corrected by the coding staff. Works closely with other members of the revenue cycle team to address identified issues.
  5. Responds to RAC, Medicaid and other payer requests for code or DRG changes, writing appeals and contacting physicians as necessary. Ensures that all of these requests and subsequent outcomes are logged.
  6. Works closely with the medical staff to resolve any coding issues.
  7. Works with Clinical Documentation Specialists to resolve DRG assignment discrepancies.
  8. Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:


    Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Health Information Management or a related field of study from an accredited college or university.
  • 3 plus years of healthcare coding experience.
  • 2 plus years of experience in a relevant management or supervisory role in a healthcare related field.
  • OR

  • Associates Degree in Health Information Technology or a related field of study from an accredited college or university.
  • 4 plus years of healthcare coding experience.
  • 2 plus years of experience in a relevant management or supervisory role in a healthcare related field.
  • Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Health Information Management or a related field of study from an accredited college or university.
  • 5 plus years of relevant experience in an acute care setting.
  • Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

  • Current certification through the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Managements (CCHIIM) as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
  • Preferred Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
