Safely navigating winter weather

In Texas, the weather can be very unpredictable. If you are not properly prepared, this can lead to dangerous situations.

Preparing yourself and being aware of winter hazards is important. With education and action, you can be sure that this winter won’t catch you off guard!

Here are four tips to combat the cold:

1. Know the difference between frostbite and hypothermia

FrostbiteA person can develop frostbite when their skin is exposed to extremely cold temperatures, which causes the skin and tissue to freeze.

Symptoms include:

  • Numbness
  • Pain
  • Skin Discoloration
  • Tingling

Hypothermia A person can become hypothermic when their core body temperature is below 95 degrees. This can be caused by prolonged exposure to cold weather or water.

Symptoms include:

  • Shivering
  • Disorientation
  • Weak pulse or shallow breathing
  • Loss of consciousness

How to prevent frostbite and hypothermia:

  • Wear clothing that covers the nose, ears, toes, cheeks, chin, and fingers.
  • Use water-resistant clothing when possible.
  • Remove any clothing articles that are wet or frozen.
  • Stay out of cold temperatures for extended periods.

2. Prevent slips and falls

According to the CDC, nearly one million adults are injured due to slips and falls each year. This is the leading cause of death in older (65+) adults.

Winter weather often brings snow, sleet, ice, and rain, increasing the likelihood of falling.

Slips and falls may cause:

  • Broken or bruised bones
  • Head injuries
  • Reluctance to physical activity
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Falls can be prevented by:

  • Wearing closed-toed shoes with good traction.
  • Being mindful when walking outdoors in cold temperatures.
  • Covering driveways and sidewalks with ice-melt tools before freezing weather to minimize the impact.

3. Practice Heat Safety

Using space heaters or electric heating appliances is a common way to warm your home in the cold weather. While this is a resourceful way to overcome winter weather, it is important to be mindful of the risks associated with these appliances.

To safely heat your home:

  • Properly ventilate the area to avoid carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Keep heating sources away from flammable materials.
  • Turn off space heaters when they are left unattended.

4. Prepare for power outages

Power outages during winter storms are common. They can be caused by weather conditions, damage to electrical sources, or an overexertion of energy.

Essential services such as lighting, heating, and communication can be disrupted during these outages. Planning for these instances will allow you to stay safe this winter.

Prepare in advance by:

  • Keeping non-perishable food items handy.
  • Ensuring you have plenty of blankets and warm clothing.
  • Always keep flashlights, batteries, and portable chargers on hand.
  • Staying informed about potential severe weather conditions.
